DRAWING FOR BEGINNERS

This five week course in the bright and spacious hall at the Hearth, Horsley, is the ideal way to ignite a love of drawing. Your tutor is well known for creating a happy, relaxed learning experience which promises to be fun and facinating. He is also a highly accomplished draughtman who can demonstrate the skills that will take your work to the next level.

Its a myth than being able to drawing is a gift. It’s a learnt skill. Yes, some people have more interest in art than others and appear to have a natural aptitude, but anyone with the capability to draw can become better at it with training. Jason has seen students who show little skill on arrival at a class become quite proficient at drawing in a matter of weeks creating convinging portrait studies from photographs. So don’t be shy, come and join the group and see if you can surprize yourself and your family and friends with what you are able to draw by the end of the course.

Jason Skill, your tutor, has taught drawing to adults for more that thirty years. He has taught art for Newcastle University, The Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle City Learning and Newcastle and Gatehead Colleges. He is presently an artist partner with SAA and has his own online educational video buisiness – Studio

Why does Jason think this course would be of value to you as an artist ?

Being able to draw might enable you to help your children or grandchildren with their art. It will open a door to much greater appreciation of art and also enable you to feel more confident about painting if you can more easily draw out a composition. Drawing is communication. It allows you to begin to illustrate your ideas to others. This might enhance your presentation skills at meetings or enable you to visualise how alterations to your garden or kitchen might look. Drawing is the bedrock on which most traditional and many modern artforms are built. It’s a set of practical and thinking skills you may not have yet that could enhance your life.

What will you do on the course ?

  • Practice mark making and basic shading to enhance your confidence with a pencil
  • Explore how to measure accurately two domentional images – drawing a face
  • Learn how to draw and combine shapes to construct forms.
  • Begin to edit out sections of your line work to create more three dimentional forms

What do you need to bring ?

On the first week of the course will need to bring a 2b pencil, biro, erasure, pencil sharpener and pad of drawing paper
