Many people dream of sitting in the landscape and sketching with some skill. Jason, your tutor, believes it’s an achievable goal even for beginners. Why? Because landscape artists commonly use a quite small range of marks. So learning first how to make the marks and then beginning to explore where to use them effectively can quickly transform your work.

This four week course in the bright and spacious hall at the Hearth, Horsley, is the ideal way to ignite a love of landscape drawing. Your tutor is well known for creating a happy, relaxed learning experience which promises to be fun and facinating. He is also a highly accomplished draughtman who can demonstrate the skills that will take your work to the next level.

It’s a myth than being able to drawing is a gift. It’s a learnt skill. Yes, some people have more interest in art than others and appear to have a natural aptitude, but anyone with the capability to draw can become better at it with training. So don’t be shy, come and join the group and see if you can surprize yourself and your family and friends with what you are able to draw by the end of the course.

He has taught art for Newcastle University, The Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle City Learning and Newcastle and Gatehead Colleges. Learning to draw landscapes would be very helpful if you later want to explore painting in any media. It’s also a great skill to add to your drawing knowledge because it promotes a more free and playful use of the pencil compared to traditional methods of illustrating still life, portrait and figure drawing

What will you do on the course ?

• Practice mark making used traditionally in landscape drawing
• Examine how artists both past and present use these marks to mimic the look of landscapes
• Draw from landscape reference material
• Draw basic landscapes from imagination

What do you need to bring ?

On the first week of the course will need to bring a 2b pencil, biro, erasure, pencil sharpener and pad of drawing paper
