Studio live course – Tumbling Water

Painting moving water, tumbling over rocks, is a skill that many painters hope to perfect. Scenes of this kind captivate everyone who visits this kind of landscape, so its little wonder that most artists hope to replicate the beauty of these scenes.

Medium – Watercolour

What will you do on the course ?

  • Learn how to create the structure of cascading water using a descending staircase model
  • Learn how to turn corners to help your rivers meander through your picture
  • See how to drive your marks directionally to reflect the movement of the water as it flows over and around boulders and stones
  • Create basic rock and vegetation effects
  • Explore how to interpret a photograph or video of tumbling water so that you capture the most important elements of the scene
  • During the course you will create drawings and painting sketches that help you better understand how to create believable tumbling water;
  • …then you will make finished artworks which pull together the ideas shown in the preceding weeks.
What will you need to undertake the course in terms of art materials ?
  • Drawing equipment:
  • Pencil, erasure and a pencil sharpener
  • Computer printing paper or drawing paper sheets, at least A4 – about 20 sheets
  • Painting equipment:
  • 2 Water pots, Watercolour palettes, Watercolour paints, Watercolour brushes
  • I recommend a wash brush, size 12 or 10 round, a 6 round and 2 round – sable and synthetic mixture brushes
  • Watercolour paper – bockingford ‘NOT’ surface – 300gsm or 140lb
  • Accessories: Drawing board, masking tape, kitchen roll.
To take part in the first lesson you will need to first join studio ( or already be a member ).
To continue the rest of the course you would need to subscribe to full content after joining. This costs around the same as the price of a cup of coffee a week.
Jason will deliver this course using live-streamed video sessions, where you’ll be able to use the Chat facility to pose questions to Jason during the demonstration, and then later share your work with other students, gaining feedback from Jason and fellow learners.

The event is finished.
