Pen & Wash for beginners

Pen and wash drawing by an old master

Considered by many to be a bridge between drawing and painting, pen and wash was the ‘go to’ method in the past for artists looking for a way to quickly note down the structure and tone of a scene, in preperation for a painting or engraving. Pen and wash requires minimal equipment, so is a low cost way to take those first steps from drawing to painting.

What will you do on the course ?

  • learn how to pre-mix washes with ink
  • explore how to match tonal values with those found in your reference material
  • discover how to plan your images to save time and heartache
  • discuss how artists of the past have used pen and wash to illustrate forms
  • replicate the marks made by past masters in exercises
  • creating a finished pen and wash drawing
